Looking for the best free antivirus protection. Here's a few good ones which don't cost a cent. Lets take a look at them.
BitDefender - www.bitdefender.com
Voted the Product of the Year 2014 by AV-Comparatives, this product took out the awards night. It took out the main award based on Protection, Detection, Performance and Malware.
It's GUI is easy to use and very intuitive. You can continue to use your computer while a scan is taking place in the background and not notice that it is running. A very good product and very solid.
AVG Free Antivirus - free.avg.com
This is my personal favorite. I run it on my personal laptop and it has saved me more than a few times. AVG are a well established company and have been around since Adam, which in internet terms is 1991, has over 200 million customers worldwide and knows how to handle virus detection at a professional level because it is one of the oldest and established at doing it.
The basic free version offers virus detection and protection capability. The upgraded "pay" version has extra bells and whistles like "Web protection" while surfing to stop you getting any nasties while visiting different sites, Email protection as well as the free based options.
The only downside to AVG is it is a manual upgrade for the free version with the paid version doing automatic upgrades. Other than this, it is a great product and highly recommend.
The virus detection database is automatically updated as well. There is also a version available for android phones.
It took the big boy a while to get this one out, but after a rash of direct hits on their operating system which hurt the brand, they released their own free version of antivirus detection.
Part of the Microsoft security essentials package, Microsoft antivirus does a great job of detecting and eliminating viruses.
The full package offers protection against virus, spyware and malicious software and stops them from disrupting your computer. Being from Microsoft if can be a bit bloated and resource hungry but it does a n "ok" job on protection.
ClamAV - www.clamav.com
ClamAV was the first truly free antivirus programs as it was released under GPL as a public program and the first open sourced antivirus program. (Yes, you can actually check out the C code to see how it works) and has been around since Adam. (I didn't know Adam had a computer, well there you go. Actually been around since 2004)
If is free across all platforms including servers. The is a paid component for windows which adds extra features. Great value.
Avira - www.avira.com
This is another best of breeds program. Very reliable and plays well if you have other antivirus detectors running. (Yes, some people run more than one antivirus program)
It has versions available for PC, Mac, IOS & Andriod so is very versatile. It received rave reviews when it launched. It is less resource hungry and uses minimal resources in the background. AV-Comparatives consider it the best in it's class.
